(CDC) - On 14th November morning, in Buon Ma Thuot city, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Embassy of The Netherlands in association with Daklak province held 1st Forum on solutions for sustainable development of cocoa sector in Vietnam.
Participating in the forum there are Study Institutes, Tay Nguyen University, Can Tho University, Agriculture and Forestry University-Ho Chi Minh city, Community Development Center, international organizations, the foreign and domestic purchasing enterprises, the representatives of management of 14 provinces, cities in Mekong Delta, Southeast, Central Highlands growing cocoa and some typical cocoa farmers…

At the forum, the international and domestic delegates stated the global overall of cocoa sector and ít impacts to Vietnam cocoa development and some shortcomings in farming, extension, financial supporting for cocoa farmers…the forum also provided solutions to develop cocoa development strategy based on exploit potentiality, advantages as well opportunities, as well as take advantage of international cooperation, especially Public Private Partnership (PPP) with cocoa development countries, active to integrate into the world economy in 3 issues: science and technology, connecting market, advising policy and organizing cocoa production towards high quality, enhancing cocoa farmers’ income, protecting environment. By 2015, the whole country strives to grow the new one with 33.500 ha, in which cocoa in business stage of 23.000 ha, with the average productivity of 1 ton/ha, with yield of 23.000 tons of dried cocoa fermented and the exporting overturn from $ 40-50 millions. By 2020, the whole country plants 50,000 hectares, of which cocoa business area increased to 38.500 ha, with the output of 45.700 tons of dried cocoa bean fermented, with a total export value reach from $ 65 to 75 millions

Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development plan and identity areas for cocoa development that is central provinces in the Mekong Delta, Southeast and Central Highlands. Functional departments continue their investment to choose the variety, recognizing the current cocoa with high yield, good quality, and adaptation to climate change conditions to supplement to new varieties. Improving processes of cultivation (monoculture, intercropping, care, pest control, fermentation processing, preservation ...), policies support on growing, caring for cocoa households in difficulty...Good organization of the investment-linked materials, consumption of cocoa products between enterprises and farmers, the situation of competitive pressure to lower the price or quality won’t be happened and continue to implement effectively international cooperation projects in the field of sustainable cocoa development of donors of United States and the Netherlands ...
Currently, there are 22.415 ha of cocoa, focused in 3 areas of the Mekong Delta, Southeast and Central Highlands, in which the area of cocoa in business stage with 10.128 ha, the productivity of 6 quintal/ ha, with the yield of over 5.700 tons of dry cocoa bean/ year. Most cocoa production is purchased for export, with stable prices, so initially attracted farmers to invest cocoa development. However, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the growth rate of area, yield and production of cocoa is slow, many growers whose psychology is not assured of production efficiency. /.
