Preliminary Conference of recultivation coffee in Central Highlands

(CDC) – On June 25th, at Thang Loi One Member Limited Company (Krong Pak district), Vietnam Coffee Cocoa Association (Vicofa) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD ) held preliminary conference of recultivation coffee in the Central Highlands. Attending the conference were Mr. Dinh Van Khiet - Vice Chairman of Dak Lak province, Mr. Luong Van Tu – Chairman of Vicofa, Mr. Le Ngoc Bau –Chief Representative of Agricultural Science and Forest Institute in Central Highlands and The Central Highlands Steering Committee, People’s Committee in the Central Highlands provinces and the related departments and agencies.

At the conference, VICOFA said that in the current time, the whole country has about 622.168 ha of coffee, coffee area concentrated primarily in the Central Highlands, which has 200.099 hectares in Dak Lak, Lam Dong has 151.020 ha, Dak Nong  114.188 ha, Gia Lai 77.688 ha . The average yield of coffee bean in the country is about 23.5 quintals / ha and production reached 1.4 million tons. In total coffee area of the country has about 86,000 ha, accounting for 17.3% of the old coffee over  20-25 years old, in addition, approximately 40,000 ha of coffee under 20 years but have expression of aging, poor growth, low efficiency. With the reality, the renewable of coffee is posed as the urgent need, estimated the replacement and convert crop of coffee from 140,000 to 160,000 hectares in the next 5 to 10 years.

Implementing the renewable of coffee, from 2012 up to now, with the funds from enterprises and loans, The Vietnam National Coffee Corporation has replanted about 2,000 hectares, in which in Dak Lak 700 ha, Gia Lai 650 ha, Kon Tum 350 ha, Dak Nong and others 300 ha. To support the capital for recultivation coffee program in the Central Highlands in 2013 – 2015 period, Vietnam Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development has approved a credit package 8,000 to 10,000 billion. However, according to opinions of some representatives, the loans disbursement is limited because the interest rates are high, whereas the recultivation requires farmers have to liquidate the coffee plantations in 2 years, so it is hard to ensure their living. In order to promote the effectiveness of recultivation, from 2010 up to now, VICOFA spent almost 6 billion and signed the contract to buy 15.69 tons of seeds and seedlings of 471,000 Ea Kmat company belongs The Western Highlands of Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute to grant freely to 05 MARD of 5 Central Highlands provinces nursery and delivery for coffee growers. At present, our country has 2 methods of recultivation coffee with grafted trees and seedling trees.

 

In Dak Lak, the largest coffee area of the country, in 2012 was replanted 2,644 hectares, in 2013 the recultivation area was 3.643 hectares, 2014 the recultivation plan is 3,758 hectares. In recent years, the  Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has instructed districts, towns and cities implemented the technical processes for recultivation coffee to farmers to help them have more awareness of selection seedlings, seeds to ensure recultivation  process efficiency, quality coffee plantation.

  

At the conference, the delegates said that to carry out effective recultivation coffee in the Central Highlands provinces must comply the technical process, seed sources to ensure quality, have favorable policies on loan...

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Dinh Van Khiet - Vice Chairman of Dak Lak province said that the recultvation of coffee is very essential to improve efficiency in the coffee sector and towards sustainable development for this major plant in the Central Highlands provinces. To replante the coffee with high effect, the government should issues replanting schemes coffee comprehensive; need coffee production planning appropriate to fit the needs of the market; Agriculture and Rural Development Bank should cut interest rates and appropriate loans procedures to create favorable condition for businesses and farmers access to capital in order to ensure the progress and quality of the coffee recultivation. Preliminary Conference of recultivation coffee in Central Highlands.
