Pepper export turn - over in 2014 is expected to reach $ 1 billion

(CDC) - On May 22nd, at the annual meeting of the Vietnam Pepper Association ( VPA ) held in Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Do Ha Nam - Chairman of VPA forecasted pepper exports this year will reach about 150,000 tons , in which re-exports about 20,000 tons ; export turn - over about $ 1 billion.

This year exports will hit a record in the history of Vietnam‘s pepper development.
In the first 5 months of the year, while exports of some agricultural products faced difficulties, the country‘s pepper exports was estimated at 90,000 tonnes with a turnover of approximately $ 600 million, up nearly 50 % compared with the same period last year.
According to Mr. Nam, one of the reasons for the success pepper industry is due to the two -way sharing information effectively between VPA and businesses, farmers on the productive situation and market prices in local and the world, production forecasts, commodity circulation, export business; in which, the Association played the role on watching the supply and the demand, pepper prices in domestic market and the world, then farmers based on the information to make the average benchmark price and to decice selling or not .

Due to the calm of the farmers and the supply timely the information from associations, businesses have the opportunity to create goods sources, actively negotiating export contracts, restrictions on license sales, avoiding risks.
Thus, in recent years the domestic market is stabilizing, domestic and exports prices remain highly from the first time of harvest.
However, according to VPA, this year‘s pepper industry in the country will face with many challenges due to natural calamities, pests and increasing production costs.
In particular, the export market require to enhance ensuring food safety and hygiene, such as cleaning products, organic farming, certified quality. So, from now the pepper plantation and processing need to deploy the right solutions.
To meet market‘s demand, in the past period VPA recommended farmers to switch over organic pepper planting, limiting using fertilizer, chemical drugs.
Currently, many growers have applied standards of scientific and technological progress towards sustainable organic, hundreds of farmers pepper production is certified according to the GAP (Good Agricultural Practice).
