(CDC) - On the morning May, 29th, in 2-9 Conference (PKU), Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Provincial People‘s Committee of Gia Lai and the World Bank (WB) held a launching ceremony for the Central Highlands poverty reduction project, with the participation of over 200 delegates from central ministries, financial institutions and six project provinces is Kon Tum, Gia Lai , Dak Lak , Dak Nong, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai. Mr. Dao Quang Thu - Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment, Mr.Pham The Dung - Chairman of the provincial People‘s Committees, Ms. Jennifer Sara - Director of Sustainable Development - World Bank representative co -chaired the conference.
According to the accessment of World Bank (WB) representative, Central Highlands is the region rich in natural resources, agricultural production towards goods develpoment and also develops accessible focal economic zones as Da Nang, Nha Trang. However, the speed of poverty reduction in the region is low. Nearly 74 % of ethnic minority people in the region living below the poverty line of the Government, the proportion of children stunted and sickly regions of the country at the highest level, the enrollment rate at primary level is low most. Therefore, poverty reduction projects in the Central Highlands are considered a poverty reduction strategy of the Government, in which World Bank is supporting partners with $ 159 million (in total capital of project - U.S. $ 165 million).
The project will be implemented in 130 poor communes in 26 districts of 6 provinces, including Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai. Particularly in our province, the project will be implemented in 5 districts, including Mang Yang, Kbang, Kong Chro, Ia Pa, Krong Pa. The goals of the project are to improve the infrastructure of the commune and village to support livelihood development, improve living conditions, access to public services and create jobs. Simultanously, strengthen the ethnic minority groups in the project area autonomous livelihoods through strengthening food security and livelihoods, promote livelihoods diversification, develope market linkages to improve income for farmers. The project also aims to improve the capacity of staff at all levels for effective implementation of project activities, promote communication, raising awareness of the people to strengthen community participation in planning and implementation project activities.
