Laos expands the coffee area to 130,000 ha in 2025

(CDC) - Lao Coffee Association is drafting a strategy to encourage growing coffee to 2025 in order to management, operation, building capital to develop the country‘s coffee sector, and to help Laos join into the International Coffee Organization (ICO).

According to this strategy, Laos strives to improve coffee area in the country to 130,000 ha in 2025, compared with the current area about 80,000 ha.

 

Curently, Laos has studied 60 types of coffee and at the same time has raised capital for production - coffee processing, not only in the Bolaven Plateau, Southern Laos, but also to the Northern provinces, to meet growing demand increase of the domestic market and export.

 

Lao coffee association said that in fiscal year, 2013, Laos has harvested 27,000 tons coffee types, with a total value of $ 67 million.

 

The first six months of fiscal year, 2014, Laos has exported 21,800 tonnes coffee with the value about $ 47 million.

 

Chairman of Lao Coffee Association, Mr.Sinouk Sisombath said that the quality of Laos’s coffee production is not inferior to other countries.

 

He also expressed his believe in the potential development of Laos coffee sector when the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is expected to be formed in 2015.

 

In addition to positive business results, the coffee industry is creating stable employment for about 20,000 households in Laos and indirect employment for about 300,000 people, contributing to the poverty alleviation of this country. / .
