Hanoi: Agricultural Forum reducing greenhouse gas emissions

(CDC) - On 17/09/2014, in Hanoi, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in collaboration with the International Program Support Group (ISG), Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) organization the Forum "Greenhouse gas emissions from agricutural production sector."

Forum participation of representatives of its units: Department of Horticulture, Department of Science, Technology and Environment, National Center for Agricultural Extension, Project Management Board of Agriculture, Institute of Policy and Strategy development rural (IPSARD); Research institutes, universities, research institutions at home and abroad: Environment Institute of Agriculture - Agricultural Science Institute of Vietnam, Can Tho University; representatives of FAO, ADB, Environmental Protection Fund (EDF), the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV), together with representatives of the farmers in An Giang, Kien Giang, Binh Dinh, Quang Binh.

 

Forum opening remarks, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Quoc Doanh highlighted the impact of climate change to the economic and social life in general, greenhouse gas emissions in agricultural production, especially rice cultivation, so the study and application of methods of rice cultivation in greenhouse gas emissions for each production region is very important. According to the Deputy Minister, agricultural production accounts for 14% of the sources of greenhouse gas emission. To reduce emissions in agriculture, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has set 2020 targets, Horticulture sector will decrease by 5.7 million tons of CO2, equivalent to 10% of greenhouse gas emissions in the farming sector.

 

To achieve the above results, the Department of Crop will apply the advanced farming techniques under saving water and input costs; collecting, reusing and handling straw ... in order to minimize the greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution.

 

At the Forum, delegates heard a report and share of some units that related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emission, such as: "Orientation of rice cultivation in greenhouse gas emissions in the farming sector and against climate change "DCP; representatives of international projects in Vietnam: EDF, SNV ... share the results of the implementation of projects to reduce emissions in Vietnam; representatives of FAO, ADB, IFSARD ... CSA share concepts, NAMA in responses to climate change; opportunities and potential development of organic agriculture, environmental protection in the rice chain; recommendations in appling rice cultivation emissions reductions in strategies of restructuring of Vietnam rice.

 

Representatives of the National Center for Agriculture, Dr. Ha Thuy Hanh - Deputy Director of the Center reports the results of the project "Strengthening the extension system in Vietnam mitigation strategies emissions: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture (EC-LEDS ) ". The report focuses on the content of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in rice cultivation and livestock bovine. The project was implemented in four provinces: Hanoi, Hue, Thai Binh and Can Tho. Deployment model results in EC-LEDS project for local good reviews about the technical implementation, low cost and still bring economic benefits to farmers and effective emissions reduction glass. In that integrate activities with other projects of National Agricultural Extension Center is the sponsor appreciation for the sustainability of the project.

 

End Forum participants discuss, contribute opinions to the implementation of the project, develop a strategy and replication processes of rice cultivation to reduce emissions for each production region.
